Bobby Z Polka Joyland Show aired on WNEP on Saturday evenings at 7:00 PM following the Pennsylvania Lottery_1980. The half-hour show was taped in the spacious Laurel Ballroom of the Pocono Hershey Resort located at White Haven, Pennsylvania. Our viewers traveled to the Poconos often to dance on the show. The success of Polka Joyland could be attributed to the happy music played by the polka bands, and lively polka dancing. I was occasionally asked by the producer to play my cordovox-accordion on the show while accompanying a talented singer.
Bobby Z Polka Joyland Show attracted quite a big audience in its time slot according to Nielsen ratings. We were up against Hee Haw on WBRE. The Producer/Director was Adam Sawicki who had amazing creative talents that went into producing each episode.Adam Sawicki produced several live broadcasts for the benefit of charity organizations. I recall one such charity fundraiser airing live from the Watres Armory in Scranton, although I can't seem to recall the organization.
Leo Kovaleski, Owner, Ziebart Auto-Truck Rustproofing of Scranton and Swoyersville, was my prime business sponsor on both television and radio. I wonder how many of you can still hear the powerful exclamation at the end Ziebart commercials, "Nobody does it better than the pros at Ziebart. It's us or rust!" Twenty-five years have passed since Bobby Z Joyland Show aired on WNEP. Fortunately, all of the episodes were taped at home on VHS. As technology advanced the shows were converted over to DVD. My days on WNEP have long passed, but the memories will last forever. |
