The American Cancer Society Telethon is broadcast annually on WYLN-TV 35 from the Hall of Presidents at Genetti Best Western Motor Inn, Hazleton, Pennsylvania. The charity event has raised much needed funds over the years, that have been put to great use funding programs that help families of those diagnoised with cancer. For more than twenty-years I enjoyed working beside co-hosts Andy Mehalshick, News Anchor on WBRE, and Pat Ward, News Anchor for Cable News 13.
One emotional experience that caught me a little bit off guard while on the air came after introducing two young brothers from Reading, Pennsylvania to our television audience. The two brothers raised money as a service project for Webelos Scouts. The youngest of the brothers asked me if they could sing a song they had written and dedicate it to cancer patients. I replied, Let's hear it!"
The American Cancer Society Telethon is produced by the staff at WYLN-TV 35. The twenty-hour event airs annually in February over WYLN and is picked up by cable tv outlets throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania I would be remiss if I failed to mention Joe Gans who provided the spark for the first broadcast of the Cancer Telethon in our area. The Gans Family has offered The American Cancer Society equipment and personnel for more than twenty-five years.
Volunteering for many charity events over the past thirty years afforded me gratifying rewards. I had the opportunity to interview many cancer survivors on the American Cancer Society Telethon. All of these very special persons interviewed shared a very special common bond in that they were thankful to be alive. |
