HISTORY OF VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANIES

LACKAWANNA COUNTY

Carbondale

Scranton

Scranton author and historian Joseph M. Klapatch has penned two books as part of a series of books he’s putting together on the histories of Lackawanna County fire departments. His research projects extend back to the days of horse-drawn fire wagons during the mid-1800’s. His first endeavor in publishing his first book “The History of Carbondale, PA Fire Department 1843-2015" occurred in 2015.

“The Scranton Fire Department 1854-Present" including Minooka Hose Company” written by Klapatch was released in 2016. The book is 324 pages and includes histories on 67 fire companies in Scranton’s volunteer days. Both books are currently on sale at Library Express in the Marketplace at Steamtown; Lackawanna County Historical Society in Scranton; Carbondale Library; Taylor Library and the Pennsylvania State Fire Museum in Harrisburg.

As work continues on the third and future books in the series, more firefighters have expressed interest in having the local historian research their fire companies. For more information or to purchase books by mail order please write the author directly at sendem39@aol.com
